Thought for the Day: It is better for a thousand innocents to die than for one heretic to escape.
It is ten thousand years since the Emperor walked among mortal men, carving out an Empire among the stars and reuniting the fragmented human civilizations that had spread across the galaxy. His mortal life ended on the final days of the Horus Heresy, and his ascension to godhood was complete. Entombed at the very heart of ancient Terra upon the Golden Throne, the Carrion Lord of the Imperium suffers every day. He is between life and death, his body in stasis, while his indomitable spirit battles on for the human race. Every day the great machines consume thousands of sacrificial psykers, but the burden of it all rests upon the shoulders of the Emperor. Without him, we are nothing.
Today the High Lords of Terra rule in the Emperor's name, guiding the vast Empire stretched thinly throughout the stars, protecting it from its many foes. Vast armies of the Imperial Guard, along with the Imperial Navy, grind any foe into dust. The elite forces of the Space Marines are genetically enhanced warriors willing to die for their Emperor, armed and armored with the best munitions the Imperium can offer. To be human in this time is to be one amongst untold billions, but in this war mere survival is justly hailed as victory.
The Imperium has many foes. Huge Ork armies sweep down onto countless worlds, thrilling at the simple joys of battle, pillaging and wasting lands. The inscrutable Eldar strike with precision and deadliness, their aims impossible to determine, sometimes friend, often enemy, but always alien. The Tyranids envelop worlds, stripping them bare to the very bedrock, assimilating all organic life in a relentless assault. The powers of Chaos lurk at the edges of the Imperium, ready to vomit forth the blackest of traitors, legions of Chaos Marines still fighting their age-old battle against the Emperor, whom they betrayed so long ago. Demons themselves stalk the battlefield, lending their unholy might to the conquest and corruption of countless worlds.
The body of the Imperium festers with maggots of disbelief and betrayal. Worlds cast off their ancient allegiances, heedless of the necessity for racial survival, purity, and focus. The Inquisition was formed precisely for this purpose. It admits only the hardiest of individuals, battle-tested in thousands of ways and possessing unshakable faith in the Emperor and the Imperium. These men(and occasionally women) are answerable only to their own organization, and sometimes (but not always) the High Lords of Terra. They protect the bulk of humanity from threats that most could never even understand. Their methods are widely varied, ranging from simple advisement to the cleansing of entire worlds. They are the real warriors, those who have seen the worst face of evil that mankind and other unspeakable creatures can muster. They can only trust themselves and their faith in the Emperor to complete their sacred duty.
Now, an Astropath's dying transmission, originating from the world Hyperius Prime deep in the Segmentum Solar five light-years from Terra itself, has been picked up by a secret Inquisitorial station. Here Inquisitor Corvax has recently returned from a long mission upon Macharia, infiltrating and eradicating a Genestealer cult. The message is obscure, but troubling. Swiftly the Inquisition has moved to block the psychic call, activating agents on other worlds and relaying its own message to disrupt any awkward outside inquiries. Mankind must remain ignorant of any threats from within, lest it fall before the threats from without. There is no time to waste. Let the purge begin.
