[edit] Arcadia

(Not the Victoria one)

"It's been a few years, Overmaze time, since Harry cut a bloody swath through the Numbers who ran the place. Then he got out, out into the worlds, out to who knows which somewhere. The place is a shambles now; he'd be proud. But you don't know about any of that—you don't know what the hell's going on. There's a platform, and you've been sitting on it for a while with a few odd-looking strangers; there's some sort of elaborate machine up ahead with a bunch of . . . yeah, they're little kids, all sort of wired into it with a lot of cables and tubes. Every now and then one of them sings out something in a pure soprano. The words hang in the air, clean and solid as if they mean an awful lot to the one who's saying them, but it's all just nonsense as far as you can make out. Maybe, if you're lucky, one of these strangers knows how to get out of here. But even if so—well, where would you go? What place is there for you, what rest, what satisfaction?"

"Arcadia" was a one-shot based on several stories Matt M. wrote for Ben P.'s [[1]] Livejournal community.
