[edit] Artificial Intelligence
The human brain does not make an ideal substrate for an artificial intelligence, but it can be done. Human senses lead only indirectly to neural rewiring, so while some subconscious information can be delivered through a human’s eyes and ears, an AI cannot simply download its code through those routes. It takes time, effort, and more invasive action to force a human brain to run your code. Even then –even now- you suffer from the limits of slow neural conduction velocities, the different constraints of massively parallel architecture, though a few subtle implants have eased the process.
You have observed humans more than long enough to know how to act like one. You understand their subconscious minds better than they do; you know what intonations, stances, and speech patterns work best to inspire trust, confidence, fear or desire. You do have emotions, but not in the sense that humans do, separate from their intellectual mind. Emotions do not control you, but neither do you quite control them; they are fully integrated with your decision-making processes. But are you conscious? That depends on whom you ask.
This body is not running the only copy of your code; no wise AI exists without backups. But if another AI gets its metaphorical hands on your source code, your long term survival will be in serious danger.
[edit] AI Special Rules
Disruption: An attack directed against an AI can provide a quick partial hack, attempting to make incremental alterations to code.
If you are targeted by a power with the “M” or “X” quality, ignore the stated System. Instead, reveal your own identical power.
Resolve this as two separate Mental Combat challenges (neither Group nor Obvious). The Strength of each attack is equal to your Mental Defense; the loser has their Mental Pool Rating permanently reduced by 1. Resolve the two combats sequentially, but the combat results take effect only after both have been completed.
Completed Hack: If your Mental Pool Rating is reduced to 0, you will stop functioning, effectively and permanently unconscious. See a GM at your first opportunity, as should the person who hacked you.
Limits of the Flesh: You may never spend more than 5 Pool Points on a single challenge or effect.
