[edit] GAIUS
GAIUS is a World that floats on an endless ocean, protected by forces that ward off the Eternal Night. In some ways, it is quite like our world the names, the languages, the people all have some similarities to things on found of Earth. In other ways, its quite different the world is flat, there are demons and faeries, and, most importantly, there are Gods that directly and visibly affect its history.
GAIUS is divided into two major continents, known only as the East and the West, and two minor continents, known as the North and the South. Upon these four lands there dwell 7 distinct cultures of people, all with a technology similar to the late Bronze Age on Earth. Unlike our world, the landscape in GAIUS is quite more malleable islands move and disappear, new exotic lands can always be found over the horizon, and the Salt Sea goes on till the Edge of Creation.
GAIUS is lit by a Sun during the day, and bright stars at night. The weather tends to be more extreme the further away from the center of the world one travels. All in all, it's a pretty nice place to live.
However, the Gods and their associates are unable to enter GAIUS directly. Instead, they may manifest part of their essence within GAIUS, called an Avatar, to do their bidding. This significantly weakens and distracts the deity, so it is not done as often as one might think. Most Gods are perfectly happy manipulating their people through the ancient channels and aid of the Custos.
[edit] Limbo
Limbo is where the various spirits, Gods, and monsters of GAIUS dwell. A formless, shifting, shrieking not-grey experience, most things in there desperately desire to leave. Luckily for everyone, most of them are unable to do so.
Countless things have disappeared into Limbo, and countless mysteries exist within it. Exploring it is not a focus of this game, though if you spend much time in the Limbo room, unexpected things may happen.
[edit] Swarha
After GAIUS was created, the Gods of that Aeon created a beautiful palace within Limbo. Naming it Swarha ("Heaven"), it rapidly became host to burgeoning ranks of new deities. Eventually, Swarha became overcrowded, so Pantheons of Gods began to create new places in Limbo. However, not wanting to be completely isolated from Divine Society (and fearing the mists of Limbo), all new Heavens were connected to Swarha.
The various Heavens in tonight's game are:
- Swarha
- The Silver Heaven, full of singing scantily clad, hermaphroditic angels. It's old, it's pretty, it pretty much defines Divine class.
- The Celestial Vault
- One of the oldest places in Creation, Swarha was built around this chamber. It's a giant auditorium, carved from a single piece of granite, built around an enchanted representation of GAIUS. If one looks closely, you can see all the cultures of GAIUS swarming around, just beyond your reach.
- The ancient channels between Gods and Men exist only in this room. The Doors to the Vault seal during the Night of the Cycle, trapping the Custos within.
- Chang Xi (Breath of Eternity)
- A giant palace, built only from Jade, Rice, and Lotus blossoms. Filled with the streams, rock gardens, and breath-taking vistas, it is considered a wonderful place to go and relax.
- Rumors persist of a secret sub-basement, filled with demon concubines. The Gods of Fu Shang have nothing to say on this matter.
- Da'oth (The Halls of Learning)
- A giant library, miles high, supported by a race of Giants conquered by Gods of Kepmet. The dominant feature in the library are various kinds of writing, both mortal and immortal scrolls, clay tablet, wax reliefs, knotted ropes, 12 ton calendar stones, engraved bones, and preserved human tattoos. There are also books.
- Finding someone in Da'oth can take a while.
- Inshar (Paradise)
- The Lapis Heaven. Supported by living towers of embracing lovers, the air of Inshar is the finest perfume, and the waters are pure ambrosia. Every want is fulfilled within these Halls, and no one knows any fear. The Gods of Ardat Lileya rule over this place, and extend their protection to all who enter.
- Mayama (The Underworld)
- A dark reflection of GAIUS, the dead come hear to rest until they are able to leave. Filled with pain, suffering and despair, the dead know little happiness, and feed only on dust. Even the Gods feel anxious here.
- The Underworld is voluminous, and its full extents are unknown. Many mortal heroes come here on quests, and quickly leave after stealing some of its secrets.
- The Polestar
- Placed into the Heavens by the Gods of the Nokomi, it allows them to watch over GAIUS even during the Night of the Cycle. A peaceful place, resembling a large forest in which everything is constructed out of different varieties of light. Birds of starlight hunt worms of moonlight, rivers of candlelight course past banks of rainbows.
- Yashtim (The Place of the Sun)
- The Golden Heaven, filled with giant pillars of fire, and endless priests conducting glorious sacrifices. No Shadow ever falls within this place, and no one can enter here uninvited. The Sun sleeps in the Palace every night, guarded constantly by the souls of the righteous.
- Maintained by the Gods of the Hurvonah, they dislike anyone entering without their permission.
- Walhal (The Traveller's Hall)
- A grand lodge, filled with the spirits of those who died in exploration. Drunk on divine mead, they argue constantly about the nature of GAIUS, and frequently end up in violent fights. However, all injury here is fleeting, and at the Dawn of the Cycle, all souls here return in full health.
- The Gods of Oesmen have created this place, and freely welcome all friends to come join in share their mead.
[edit] Cycles
Time does not pass the same way for Divine society as it does on GAIUS. In fact, most deities are incapable of perceiving mortal time in any meaningful way. Those who do, say that a Cycle can vary greatly a single generation may pass on GAIUS, or it may be hundred of GAIUN years. Most Gods do not worry about such things, as they do not change how Divine Society is conducted.
Each Cycle is divided into 4 Phases.
- Dawn: The beginning of each cycle, where a God or Goddess is awoken from their slumber by a Custos. New Mana cards are given to them at this point, and once awake, they may use them freely.
- Zenith: The high point of a cycle, where the most activity takes place. Most duels and deals *Dusk: The beginning of night, which is proclaimed rather loudly by the Custos. The Gods must try to make their plans for GAIUS solid before Night falls. This can be a very dangerous time, as many me be overzealous in their use of Mana, and leave themselves vulnerable.
- Night: When Night begins, the Doors to the Celestial Vault, and the Custos are trapped within. All the Gods must return to one of the Heavens, where they all fall into a deep slumber, and enter into Dreams.
Dreams: In the Dreaming, Gods may leave their Heavens, and wander around as per usual. However, they may not make any challenges, use any cards, enter into any warded room, or manipulate any objects. Dreams are a time of regrouping amongst the Divine Society, and many spend this time preparing for the next Cycle.
Dreams are not considered any less real, or important, than being Awake.
[edit] Custos
Custos are the servants of the Divine Society. They exist to fufill your every need. Not possessing any Mana, immune to dueling, and generally very obsequious, they scuttle about doing various errands for the Gods.
Custos have some miraculous abilities, and sometimes there presence is necessary for the Gods to do certain things. The How and Why of this is not known, and is a matter of fierce debate amongst the Divine. The exact nature of the Custos is also unknown they do not appear to be Gods or Men, and the emissaries from Faerie and Hell are silent on the matter.
In this game, there are only 3 Custos two men, one of a fair complexion and one of dark, and a woman with long hair. They have no names, but they do not change as the Cycle pass.
The Custos are in-game. Please remember this. They may be there sweeping up the ambrosia, or admiring the nymphs, but they can discover your plans, and can tell them to your enemies. However, the last Custos that did this is still being tortured in Mayama, and these three Custos seem to be the most loyal sort.
When Night falls, the Custos are sealed within the Celestial Vault. What they do in there is unknown, but when Dawn comes, they have possession of all the new Mana of the Cycle. They wake each God individually, and give them their new cards, as well as an astounding breakfast of their choice.
