A cocktail, massively popular in the Elder Days; strong-tasting, but sweetish as well.

Manhattans can be made with any of several kinds of whiskey--bourbon seems best and most common, but rye whiskey and Tennessee whiskey (e.g., Jack Daniel's) are also within bounds. (A Manhattan made with scotch is called a Rob Roy, and is not considered a real Manhattan.) This makes it a good idea, when ordering a Manhattan in a bar, to name the brand of whiskey one wants. One should also specify whether the drink should be on the rocks or straight up. Note that bartenders sometimes omit the (all-important) dash of bitters.

Manhattan

4 parts bourbon or rye whiskey

1 part sweet vermouth

1 dash bitters

Stir with ice and shake into a cocktail glass, or serve on the rocks. Garnish with a maraschino cherry.
