[edit] Premise

"The lighthouse of Pharos throws its glow for nearly a hundred miles in all directions and half again that during it's twice daily cycle. Without it, the last of the Inner Kingdoms would have fallen when the nightwalkers darkened the sky..." -The Seventh Cycle Textbook

"Listen up scum. You are here because you did something wrong. Maybe you couldn't pay back the guilds. Maybe you tried to be a hero and save someone marked by the Inquisitors. Or maybe you were just born a Lesser. Doesn't matter. Over there, through those bars, is The Stage.

You can find everything you desire there- freedom, glory, wealth, death... but I never lose all my money betting on the latter. So listen up and maybe only some of you will be a part of the carrion-feast show..." -Maggie

For one reason or another, you have found yourselves as actors for the next performance at The Stage, a twisted parody of a fighting pit where you are not even considered understudies. It is here that you- be you a slave, criminal, glory-seeker, or monster- fight for the entertainment of the masses of Pharos, The City of Light.

This is a world where nightwalkers long ago blotted out the sun with roiling dark clouds walling out the heavens. "The Shroud" has prevented anyone in this and many lifetimes from knowing the shape and brilliance of the sun, the moon, and the stars. Only through the saving grace of the Lighthouse of Pharos, a shining tower in the middle of the city, is life is allowed to flourish.

But, this is not to say that Pharos is a pure beacon of hope. Pelor, Lord of Light, holds sway in a iron theocracy-republic with the Guilds. Many say (in private) that the zealousness of the Inquisitors and the strict Guild regulations stagnate the city. Those who do not aspire to either the Church or an Guild vocation must turn to the seedier side of business or The Stage to seek their fortunes...

[edit] Character Creation and General System

Everyone will be starting as level 1 characters and follow the rules in the PBH for creating a class, i.e. 22 points for the attribute buy-up system and have 100 gold to spend on equipment.

Races:

All races listed in the Races section above are available.

Classes:

All classes in the PHB are available. I'm nominally fine with the other starting classes in the PHBII, but check by me first.

Back-story

For a back-story, I am looking for the following:

  • Three goals for your character.
  • Three fears your character has.
  • One or two connections in the city.
  • Why are you down on The Stage? Did you commit a crime or are you a lesser sold into slavery? Did you make enemies with the Inquisition? Or do you seek the glory of The Stage?

Those who submit a back-story can pick three of the following:

  • You gain an additional language.
  • You gain +2 bonus to a saving throw against a limited class of effect. (such as Fear, Charm, an Element, etc.)
  • You gain a +1 bonus to initiative checks.
  • You gain resist 2 damage type or your existing resistance to this damage type is increased by 2. At 11th level, this resistance increases to 3. At 21st level, it increases to resistance 5. Types are: Acid, Cold, Fire, Force, Lightning, Necrotic, Poison, Psychic, Radiant, Thunder.
  • You add an additional skill to your class list, and gain a +2 bonus to that additional skill. Requires two picks.
  • You can re-roll a particular skill check, but you must keep the second result, even if its worse. Requires two picks.
  • Your starting hit points are based off a non-Constitution based ability score. Requires three picks.
