[edit] Blurb

A one-shot LARP to take place at Procon, Disquiet Seas is an evening of romance, ambition, high style and deadly intrigue at the turn of the next century. The characters are tourists and travelers who have gathered at a remote port on Callisto, one of Jupiter's moons, for a festival that promises to be the Solar system's event of the year -- and quite possibly much more.

[edit] The Setting

Disquiet Seas is set in a near future in which humanity has realized the dream of permanent escape from Earth's gravity well. The Solar system has been populated far and wide by humanity's most desperate, most determined, and most extraordinary. Yet travel remains slow and difficult, and in their isolation human settlements have grown apart; those who are able to make the arduous and sometimes risky journey from one world to the next are rewarded with the exotic panoply of humanity in all its diverse splendor.

The Occasion

Even the Martian Resource Control Board's many critics must admit that the Martian Queen represents the highest achievement of human engineering: the largest moving vehicle ever constructed, and the fastest, it is an undeniable symbol of the power and prestige of Mars. At the outermost point on its maiden voyage, its passengers represent an unprecedented variety of cultures at the dawn of the 22nd century. Lunar technocrats, Venusian entrepreneurs and nouveau riches, barons of commerce and industry from Mars and Mercury, and representatives of the most powerful Terran blocs all rub shoulders in the height of comfort and luxury.

The arrival of the Martian Queen at Callisto's Mahalingam colony, then, is an occasion of the highest order. The entire planetary system, eager to counter the prevailing stereotype of its rough provinciality, has turned out to welcome its illustrious guests and show its class. Asgard Crater has opened its arms and declared an all-night festival, and Hespera Cosmopolis, the most beautiful of Jupiter's floating cities, happens to be almost directly beneath and promises an enticing evening of sights seldom seen by in-system denizens.

But tensions are high. The re-emergence of Earth after its generation-long self-isolation has upset the delicate balance of power among the planetary governments. And Earth itself conjures old, half-forgotten passions, thus far largely muted -- as the festival's organizers dearly hope they will remain.

Besides which, Callisto is also a major port, so there are of course other ships in orbit, a constant flow of workers and machines, and a number of scruffy out-system types milling about.

An awful lot of scruffy out-system types, actually.

No doubt they've come for the party.

The Characters

Characters will be pre-generated, but players will have some latitude in terms of who they play and (at this early stage) even the details of their characters' backgrounds and goals.

Background

No previous knowledge of Kalki is required, though if you've played before and would like to play an old character (provided that character is still alive...) it may be possible to make arrangements.

Further background information will be available if and when the game is approved for the Con.
