[edit] The (Brown) Fantasy Gaming (And Science Fiction) Society

A student organization at Brown University devoted to roleplaying games of a wide variety of styles, ranging from your standard closet D&D games, to the more chique White Wolf games, to fully experimental games. There is a strong tendency towards role-playing within the Society, over number crunching, but the full spectrum of gamers can be found. Some have said it is "devoted to all manner of misplaced reality."

The organization at least nominally covers Fantasy/Science Fiction interests outside of roleplaying games as well. It publishes a yearly literary magazine, Genre, encourages board and card games, keeps an (often unmaintained) library of books and rpg materials, and performs some kind of costumed shtick on Halloween. Events organized under the FGS banner have included mask-making and masked trips to WaterFire, movies (in theatres and on video), lasertag, and social events only loosely connected with the organization's purpose. FGS runs a small usually-yearly convention, ProCon, which provides an opportunity for one-shot LARP and tabletop games.

Over the years the Society has interfaced with outside organizations, such as the Nero-turned-nTeraction crowd, and individuals connected through a variety of ways to Society members. As such, though still officially a Brown organization, the nature of the Society transcends University bounds and makes it home in the world at large.

Members of FGS created a Brown University program house, Games House. The program house and FGS are distinct entities, but they have significant overlap of members, and Games House often provides on-campus space for events of interest to both.
