[edit] Game Description
"I often walked down to the black lake as a child. The ravens were circling above it, as always. The air had the marshy, silty smell to it that had become so familiar to me, for I had grown up with it; it was always strongest by the lake, however. Always noticeable. The grasses rustled in an uneven wind, and sometimes one of the birds would start cawing; but it was generally very quiet. I moved my head from side to side, trying to get a better look at my reflection in the black water, but it was difficult - the fog was fairly thick today.
"Abruptly I raised my head, the familiar instincts forcing me to pay attention. Yes... the sound of thunder, some distance off. I threw what remained of my picnic lunch into my shoulderbag and hurried home, and not a moment too soon; it was already raining by the time I reached the threshold, and they had already locked the door. We wasted no time in relocking it once I was inside.
"The fog rolled in more and more thickly, settling about the familiar shapes of our garden, such as it was, and Arcadia's small library, blurring and obscuring their forms. Now we could only wait, as we always did, until the storm had passed, and see whether anyone from the town had been taken... the baby started to cry, the long, high wails the only sound in the entire house besides for the relentless patter of rain.
"I felt the hairs on the back of my neck pricking up, and turned. To this day, I do not know what made me reach forward and draw the heavy curtains aside, but I will never forget what I saw. The thing tilted its head as it regarded me, a smile crawling across its almost-human face, and for a second or an eternity I stared in shock into its lidless liquid eyes. Then it made a beckoning gesture with one muck-encrusted hand, and I screamed and pulled the curtain closed. I slumped to the ground, suddenly aware of another sound, a backdrop to the crashing of thunder and the baby's wails: the flapping of fingerless hands against glass windowpanes."
